Remote School

Accepting Students Now - Open Enrollment for 2026/27

Our Learning Design

Remote learning works best when screen time is purposeful, limited, and balanced with offline learning. Research shows that extended, continuous screen use can impair attention, memory, and engagement—particularly for younger learners (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2016; Opal, 2024). Writing by hand has also been shown to improve retention and conceptual understanding compared to typing (Mueller & Oppenheimer, Psychological Science, 2014). For students with ADHD or executive functioning challenges, reducing digital distraction and incorporating tactile learning experiences is especially beneficial (Loe & Feldman, Clinics in Child and Adolescent Psychology, 2007).

Harmon School was intentionally designed around these findings. Our model emphasizes a healthy rhythm of on-device and off-device learning, ensuring students remain engaged, focused, and cognitively supported throughout the day. Central to this design is our commitment to small class sizes, allowing every student to be known, supported, and challenged appropriately.

Our Design

Instructional Method

Instruction at Harmon School follows a structured, teacher-led online model delivered in small classes with a maximum student–teacher ratio of 6:1. This low ratio allows teachers to closely monitor understanding, adjust pacing, and provide immediate feedback while building strong instructional relationships with students.

Live instruction is delivered in focused, manageable segments to support attention and reduce fatigue. Rather than keeping students on screens for extended periods, learning continues offline through structured practice, projects, and independent work. This approach supports sustained engagement while helping students build independence and effective learning habits.

Instructional Method

Curriculum & Academic Foundations

Harmon School partners with Savvas Learning Company to provide a rigorous, standards-aligned core curriculum across English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Savvas materials form the academic backbone of our program, ensuring depth, coherence, and academic rigor comparable to high-quality public and private schools.

To support focus and reduce screen fatigue, students receive physical, consumable textbooks for all core subjects. Writing directly in their books provides tactile feedback, limits distraction, and consolidates learning into clear, accessible formats that support organization, retention, and executive functioning.

Curriculum

ELA: Structured Literacy & Novel Studies

Our English Language Arts program integrates Savvas curriculum with Basic Language Skills (BLS), an Orton-Gillingham–based structured literacy approach designed to support students with dyslexia and other reading-based learning differences. BLS instruction is embedded within ELA lessons to systematically build phonemic awareness, decoding, spelling, and reading fluency.

In addition, Harmon School emphasizes novel studies that allow students to engage with entire, age-appropriate books, rather than short excerpts or isolated passages. Students read and discuss multiple full-length novels throughout the year, developing reading stamina, comprehension, and a genuine connection to literature.

Reading methods are flexible and inclusive. Students may read independently, listen to audiobooks, participate in oral reading with a teacher or parent, or use a combination of approaches. This ensures all students can fully participate in rich discussion and meaningful literary analysis while building confidence and skill.

What to Expect Each Day

Each school day at Harmon School follows a predictable, structured rhythm designed to support focus, engagement, and executive functioning while allowing flexibility for individual learning needs.

A typical day includes:

  • Live, teacher-led online instruction in small groups

  • Independent offline work using physical, consumable textbooks

  • Hands-on projects and applied learning using common household materials

  • Small-group collaboration and discussion

  • Teacher office hours and one-on-one support as needed

Daily schedules are intentionally designed to limit total screen time, with the majority of academic work completed offline. This structure helps students develop organization, time management, and independent learning skills while maintaining consistent academic progress.

Each Day

Student Support & Tutoring

In addition to our full-time school program, Harmon School offers one-on-one and small-group tutoring for students who need targeted academic support. Our CALP-certified specialists provide structured literacy instruction using the BLS Orton-Gillingham–based approach for students with dyslexia and related reading challenges.

We also offer executive functioning and academic coaching focused on organization, attention, planning, and task completion. Tutoring services may be provided independently or in coordination with a student’s school placement, allowing families flexible access to individualized support that builds both academic skills and lifelong learning strategies.

Community & Connection

Although Harmon School is fully online, we place a strong emphasis on community, connection, and belonging. Small class sizes allow students to form meaningful relationships with both teachers and peers, creating a supportive and collaborative learning environment.

Students engage in discussions, group projects, and shared academic experiences that foster communication, confidence, and mutual respect. Harmon School is also actively building partnerships with schools and educational organizations around the world, with the goal of creating opportunities for students to collaborate with peers from different cultures and perspectives as these partnerships develop.

Who it is for

Our Educators

Harmon School’s instruction is led by certified, experienced classroom teachers with backgrounds in both traditional and remote learning environments. Our educators bring deep knowledge of curriculum, child development, and instructional best practices, allowing them to adapt teaching to meet the needs of diverse learners.

All teachers at Harmon School are trained in structured literacy practices, including the Basic Language Skills (BLS) Orton-Gillingham–based approach, and are experienced in supporting students with executive functioning challenges such as organization, attention, planning, and task completion. This expertise allows teachers to provide targeted support while maintaining high academic expectations.

With small class sizes and a low student–teacher ratio, teachers are able to build strong relationships with students, monitor progress closely, and collaborate with families to ensure students receive consistent, effective support.
